Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
A weekly DWP payment for employees disabled because of a work-related accident or a prescribed industrial disease, with the amount set by an assessed percentage of disablement.
Overview
Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit is a weekly payment from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for people who have become disabled as a result of an accident at work or a prescribed industrial disease. The benefit applies to accidents or exposures that occurred in England, Scotland, or Wales; a separate scheme has been operated in Northern Ireland. To qualify, the claimant must have been an employee or on an approved training scheme at the time of the event — self-employed work is not covered. A healthcare professional acting for the DWP assesses the level of disablement as a percentage, and the weekly rate is tiered in 10-percent steps from 20 percent upwards, with a statutory minimum assessment of 14 percent (lower minimums apply to certain prescribed respiratory diseases such as pneumoconiosis and byssinosis). Payment does not start until 15 weeks (90 days excluding Sundays) after the accident or the onset of the disease. Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit is tax-free, is not means-tested against income or savings, and can be paid alongside other benefits, although it counts towards the benefit cap. An award may be made for a fixed period or for life, depending on the condition. Administration of this benefit is in the process of being devolved to Social Security Scotland. Individual eligibility and rate are determined by the DWP. This page references figures and criteria from the primary GOV.UK source; the authoritative source for any individual award remains the DWP.
